Deadline for applications: May 30, 2008

Summer Youth 2008 is set to begin June 30th, 2008 and continue to August 22, 2008.

The Bois Forte Summer Youth program is an 8 week program available to help youth ages 14-20 years old living either on the Nett Lake or Vermilion Reservations earn money in the summer! It is a program available to help them learn life skills that we hope that they will take with them as they grow to become our future leaders.

The Summer Youth workers do a wide variety of jobs throughout the entire 8 weeks. Many of the departments on the reservation request 1 or more youth workers to come to there worksite and work so the youth can get a feel for what it is that they do at there job. Other duties include but are not limited to: administrative duties, helping Elders around the community, mowing, raking and keeping the Reservation clean. The youth also attend Anishinabe language classes where they not only learn the language, they also learn about the culture and history.

Every Thursday we set aside for education days where we invite many different speakers to come and give the youth information about a topic we feel youth should be informed about. This day also gives the Nett Lake and Vermilion youth a chance to interact and get to know one another.

At the end of each summer the Youth have the opportunity to attend an “end of the year” trip to the Twin Cities where we stay overnight at the Mystic Lake Casino and go to Valley Fair and the Mall of America. To stay on task with our weekly schedule we do something that is educational on that Thursday we travel down. In the past years we have gone to the Science Museum where we attended the Body Worlds exhibit and also the Minnesota Zoo where workers were able to use some Ojibwa they had learned throughout the summer attending the language classes with a community elder.
