Billy Mills to romote health, heritage at Bois Forte

“Look at Mills! Look at Mills!” screamed the commentator as Billy Mills surged to the front in the final seconds of the 10,000-meter run in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. It was considered one of the greatest upsets in Olympic history, and the shock and euphoria of the moment was audible in the commentary, hoarse hollers punctuated by giddy laughter.

This month Band members will have their own opportunity to look at Mills, who will visit Vermilion and Nett Lake to headline Positive Living Month. Mills is a strong advocate of healthy living and a proud representative of the Native American community. Mills, a Sioux Indian, grew up on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. His Indian name is “Makata Taka Hela,” which means, “love your country,” or, more traditionally translated, “respects the earth.” Like many American Indians, Mills served in the military. He was commissioned as a lieutenant in the United States Marines Corp.

Today, the record-setting runner serves as the national spokesman for Running Strong for American Indian Youth, a non-profit organization that helps communities with self-sufficiency programs, youth activities and cultural identity projects.
