Myra Jane Thompson, “Mah Ma Way Gii Shi Gook” 78, Nett Lake passed away on Friday, October 30, 2015 at Fairview Range Medical Center in Hibbing.
Myra born in Nett Lake on December 4, 1936 the daughter of Raymond and Margaret (Farmer) Drift. She was a lifelong resident of the Nett Lake area. She married Leonard Thompson Sr. in 1958 in Nett Lake. Myra started her employment as a cook in the old Nett Lake School. Later she was a teacher’s aid for the Nett Lake Headstart program, then as a teacher’s aid in the school’s Anishinabe cultural program. She was a member of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa and was a foster grandparent. . Myra liked traveling, especially going to pow-wows, and enjoyed playing bingo and watching professional wrestling.
She is preceded in death by her husband: Leonard Sr. in 1971; one son Leonard Thompson Jr. in 2012); 2 brothers, Raymond Drift Jr. and Lester Drift Sr.; 2 sisters, Jeanette Drift Halvorson and Marcia Drift; and one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth “Lizzie” Thompson.
Myra is survived by her children, Curtis Thompson of Nett Lake, Janet Thompson of Nett Lake, Muriel Thompson of Duluth and Lois Thompson of Virginia.;13 grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
SERVICES: Traditional Rites will be held at 10:30 am, Tuesday, (Nov.3rd) at the Nett Lake Government & Services Center. Visitation will be after 4:00 pm Monday at the Center. Kenneth Boney will be the Spiritual Leader with Gene Goodsky the Spiritual Leader Assistant.. Casket bearers will be Henry Thompson, Nick Thompson, Orion Thompson, Curt Henry Thompson, Quentin Thompson and Charles Googleye III. The honorary bearers will be Ray Thompson, Mike Thompson, Henry Halvorson, Erick Halvorson, Peter Drift Sr., Mark Drift Sr., Allen Googleye and Shane Drift. Burial will be in the Nett Lake Cemetery.
