Melvin Arnold King Sr.
Melvin Arnold King Sr., 70, of Silverdale, passed away at his residence on Thursday, December 8, 2011.
He was born in Cloquet on January 19, 1941, to Melvin and Jennie (Roy) King. He grew up in Nett Lake and attended school at Orr. In his teenage years he worked out west on ranches moving with the seasons to different ranches. Melvin was a self-employed logger for years and drove truck for Luecken Logging. He lived in Seattle, Portland and Anchorage, Alaska, working construction and as a mechanic. He drove a semi truck for 15 years over the road for Kerr-Van Truck Lines, retiring in 1992, due to health reasons. Melvin was known as a jack-of-all-trades. He also likede a hunting, fishing and reading -especially Louis L’Amour westerns. He was very knowledgeable in computers, and even built one from scratch. His family fondly remembers him as an outstanding father and grandfather.
He is preceded in death by his father, Norman (1988), his mother Jennie (2005); 3 brothers, Norman, Francis, and Nathaniel King; 2 sisters, Arlene Morrison and Lorraine King as an infant; and one grandson, Hunter King in 2004.
Melvin is survived by 5 sons, Douglas Whiteman of Arizona, Melvin King Jr. of Nett Lake, Terrance King of Virginia, Michael King of Gheen, and Gregory Drift of Eveleth; 2 daughters, Jean L. King of Nett Lake, and Lynette Smith of Brainerd; 4 sisters, Lorraine L. Villebrun, Lela M. Goodsky, & Ann Whitecrow all of Nett Lake, and Jacqueline R. Wilson of Minneapolis; 2 half-sisters, Barbara Wynoff of Seattle, WA, and Joyce K. Davis of Nett Lake; 21 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
SERVICES: Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday (Dec. 14th) at the Nett Lake Baptist Church, where visitation will be after 4:00 PM Tuesday. Pastor Kevin Lasley will officiate. Honorary Bearers will be Clarence Roy and Melvin is now walking with Joe Isham, Hunter King, Norman King, Nathaniel King, Francis King and Frank Barnhart. Interment will be at the Nett Lake Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are with the Mlaker Funeral Home in Cook.
