Loretta May Emery died at home in San Diego, CA on November 26, 2010. She was born on the Bois Forte Indian Reservation in Minnesota on December 8, 1935 to David G. and Vaughn (Briggs) O’Leary. The O’Leary family was uprooted from Nett Lake, MN to Seaside, OR during World War II, but returned to Northern MN where Loretta graduated from Orr High School in 1953, along with her brother, Leonard G. and younger sister, Sharon (who now resides in Santee, CA with her husband Howard Bass).
Loretta married U.S. Navy Petty Officer Leslie D. Emery of Eveleth, MN on June 22, 1957 in Aiken, S.C. Her brother Len, stationed at Fort Gordon, GA stood up with them. Les and Loretta became permanent residents of San Diego in 1961 and were joined by Loretta’s parents and siblings.
She was a member of Calvary Southern Baptist Church of Linda Vista, enjoyed traveling, Las Vegas, baseball, cats (especially her tiny Josie), Little League and dining out.
Loretta was preceded in death by her parents and brother. She is survived by her loving husband, her children: Shari Farrimond (and husband Pete), Leslie David (Rigger) and wife Patti) and Loretta (Dissey) Emery and three grandsons: Joey, Kyle and Nico, numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was a loving and cherished wife, sister, aunt, grandmother and not only mother to her own children, but to numerous neighborhood children for over four decades. Internment of her ashes will be in the family plot at the Bois Forte Cemetery in June 2011.
