Justin W. Boness, “Nayta- na-moot” passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 13, 2014.
He was born on November 11, 1947 at Nett Lake, where he grew up. Justin graduated from Orr High School in 1966.
He served in the U.S. Marines in the Vietnam
Conflict, where he was part of the search and
rescue operations. After his honorable discharge,
he returned to Nett Lake. He moved to Duluth with
his companion, LuAnn Drift in 1975 and completed
the Duluth Technical College course in carpentry.
He worked for U.S. Steel for several years and
moved back to Nett Lake in 1978. Justin was a
member of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa. He
worked at the Nett Lake Sawmill and for the RTC
(Reservation Tribal Committee). He served as
Vice President on the Elder Committee.
He and LuAnn Drift were a couple for 36 years,
then formerly “tied the knot” and were married on
June 4, 2010. Justin was a avid outdoorsman, and
liked ricing, berry picking and hunting. His most
treasured times were those spent with his family,
especially his grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by one son, Marlon Drift
on Sept. 23, 2003; and 3 sisters: Freida Boshey,
Stella Sanchez and Pricilla Strong.
Justin in survived by his wife, LuAnn Drift of Nett
Lake; 2 sons Bart Drift of Virginia and Waylon
(Chrissy Johnson) ) Drift of Eveleth; 2 daughters,
Justina (Adam Strong) Drift of Nett Lake and Ellen
Whiteman; 1 sister, Marcella Drift of Virginia; 6
Grandchildren: Jaime, LaVonne, LeMar and Avery
Drift, Aiden Deegan and Haley Isham; along with
numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
SERVICES: Traditional services will be at 10:00
AM Monday, (February 17th) at the Nett Lake
Community Center, where visitation will begin
after 4:00 pm Sunday. The spiritual advisor will be
Billy Blackwell. The casket bearers will be Gordon
Adams, Clarence Roy II., Neil Strong, Vern Boney,
Francis Littlewolf and Frank Villebrun Jr. The
honorary bearers will be Jerome Whiteman, Ken
Boney, Harvey Thompson, Gary Strong, and Floyd
Morrison. Military honors will be accorded by the
honors guards of Bois Forte, Orr American Legion
and the Cook Veterans of Foreign Wars. Interment
will be in the Nett Lake Cemetery. Arrangements
