The Bois Forte Ambulance Service consists of 15 EMTs and 5 certified Drivers. This unit provides 24-hour services to residents of the Nett Lake Community and surrounding areas through Mutual Aide agreements with Orr, Cook and Littlefork. EMT's are trained to provide basic life emergency care in a wide array of emergency situations. The ambulance is equipped with up­dated technology such as: automatic defibrillator, trauma stabilization, etc. Medication variances to treat cardiac and allergic reactions are in place and as well as medication that treats asthma and diabetic emergencies. Clients are transported to the Cook Hospital located 35 miles away, with medical direction as needed by satellite phone.

The Bois Forte Purchase/Referred Care formerly known as Contract Health Services Program is the payer of the last resort of medical and dental costs for eligible participants for services that cannot be administered at the Bois Forte Medical and Dental Clinics. Persons must reside in counties covered by CHS, which include St. Louis, Koochiching and Itasca. Applications must be completed yearly to determine eligibility. Applications for Medical Assistance and other county programs can also be completed with the Contract Health staff.

Pharmacy services are available at both the Nett Lake and Vermilion Clinics, with a pharmacist and a technician at each location. They provide prescription and over-the-counter medications. Pharmacists provide counseling on all new prescriptions and are available from 8:00-4:00 Mon-Fri (closed 12-1) to answer any questions you may have about your current medications. Pharmacists can also provide medication therapy management (MTM) services, which includes a full medication review for indication, effectiveness, safety and convenience of therapy. MTM appointments aim to optimize your current drug therapy and improve therapeutic outcomes for you.  If you are interested in receiving an MTM consultation please contact your pharmacist to set up an appointment!

Native Hearts Fitness Center offers a state of the art facility with stationary and cardiovascular equipment, racket ball court, men’s and women’s lockers & saunas is open five days a week, Monday thru Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm for Band Members, resident tribal members, Bois Forte Tribal Government and Nett Lake School employees to use free of charge. The 24 hour access cards is available for purchase at $30.00 per month per individual and allows the purchaser to use the facility 24 hours/day 7 days/week according to their own schedule. Trained Fitness Staff are available during work hours to provide individual or group weight management and body composition programs. Staff are certified in Advanced CPR and First Aide and are trained to assess blood sugars, blood pressure with exercises. Various tournaments, health challenges, elders exercise, youth sports, health walks, yoga and other events are planned to get people of all ages to get moving. The Vermilion Wellness Center offers first class amenities such as men and women locker rooms, sauna, cardio and weight equipment, dumb bells and free weights and benches. The Vermilion Wellness Center is open from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm for free use of Band Members, resident Tribal Members and Bois Forte Tribal Government Employees. The only fitness center on Lake Vermilion, the Wellness Center offers a 24 access card that can be purchased by the general public for $30.00/month and use of the facility that fits your own schedule. Customers of the Fortune Bay Resort and Casino are welcome.  Other programs offered at the Vermilion Wellness Center include: elders activities, yoga instruction and youth activities.  The full size gym is open for use by local school sports teams as well as community rec teams. The Diabetes Program provides diabetes education and direct care to patients of the Bois Forte Clinics. Services are available 5 days a week by appointment at Nett Lake or Vermilion Clinics. In home services may be provided as appropriate. The Diabetes Nurse provides foot care, wound care, and monitors charts to ensure compliance with the Diabetes Standards of Care that includes: Labs, eye exams, foot exams, dental exams, medications management, immunizations and social support. Clients receive preventive education in Heart disease, Stroke, diabetes complications, healthy life style changes and Cancer Screenings. This nurse administers the Off Reservation Indian Health Grant that provides disease prevention, awareness and health screenings to off reservation American Indians in surrounding cities with a high population of Bois Forte Members. This grant helps to pay for optometry and podiatry for off reservation Bois Forte members who are not eligible for private health insurance and supplements the reservation pharmacies with diabetes supplies. The nurse supervises staff at the Native Hearts Fitness and Vermilion Wellness Center.

The Wisdom Steps Program encourages Elders to actively participate in programs that promote health screenings, health education, healthy living activities and evidenced based health programs. The program was developed by elders for elders and facilitated by the State of Minnesota. Elders who become members of the Wisdom Steps Program and complete a minimum of 46,000 steps per year and who complete the health screenings and exams become eligible to attend the annual Wisdom Steps Conference free of charge.  Participants earn incentives and recognition at the conference for their work towards becoming healthy and the number of steps that they walk during the year through a Tier system. The Wisdom Steps Program is facilitated by a Board of Directors comprised of tribal elders from Minnesota Tribes and who are appointed by their Tribal Government. The Bois Forte Tribal appointed member is Gloria Love 1-800-992-7529 and the alternate is Doris Isham 218-757-3650. Gloria Love receives administrative support from Doris Isham, RN.

New Lives/MCH programs provide home visits to support positive Lifestyles and improved pregnancy out comes through coordination of holistic health services. Native American families, prenatal through age 8, living on or near Bois Forte reservation are program eligible. New Lives offers information in several topic areas such as: Breastfeeding, labor, safe sleep, parenting, infant growth and development, home safety, health and nutrition, car seat safety, potty training, and many more.

Active participants are eligible for program incentives, pack-n-plays, car seats, breast pumps, home safety supplies, strollers, and much more. Families are welcome to join our New Lives luncheon held the 4th Wednesday in Nett Lake, and 4Th Thursday in Vermilion of each month.
