Preparation for Governor’s Fishing Opener underway
Outdoors a source of enjoyment and employment
LAKE VERMILION, MINN. – The Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener returns to northern Minnesota this May, and countless locals are working hard to prepare, embodying a North Woods reality: the great outdoors as a source of both enjoyment and employment.
Fortune Bay Resort Casino, which hosted the Governor’s Opener five years ago, is once again supporting the official kick-off of fishing in Minnesota by serving as a bronze sponsor of the 62nd annual event.
Perched on the shores of Lake Vermilion, Fortune Bay is just an hour from Kabetogama Lake, the scene of this year’s May 14-15 Opener. However, many anglers will choose Lake Vermilion for their fishing opener because it offers a less-crowded refuge for those who want to participate in the opener, but don’t care to drive so far north or battle the crowd at the Governor’s site.
As a member of the Lake Vermilion Resort Association, Fortune Bay is one of hundreds of area resorts that will be affected by fishing season, and the economic catalyst it provides. They’ll soon be selling everything from bait to boats to beer – and they’re busy preparing now.
With a full-service marina, an action-packed casino, an acclaimed golf course, plus gourmet dining and a heated pool, Fortune Bay has something for every angler – and angler’s family.
The Governor’s Open is intended to celebrate and support Minnesota’s outdoor tourism industry. With the return of the big event to northern Minnesota, Fortune Bay Resort Casino and other resorts will offer great fishing and an abundance of attractions and recreational activities for anglers and their non-fishing friends.
